In 1994 I completed a four year MA in documentary direction at the prestigious NFTS (National Film & Television School) in London. My tutor and mentor was the American film maker Herb di Gioia and to complete my final year I did individual ‘internships’ with the pioneer verité cinematographer Ricky Leacock in Paris and the documentary director Al Maysles in NY.
Upon graduating I was inducted into the final year of the British Film Institute’s Feature Film programme. Since their production department closed in ’95, I often worked as a documentary cinematographer on diverse projects including; ‘Thief of Hearts’ a posthumous profile of Hamilton Naki – gardener turned research surgeon for S. African organ transplant pioneer Christian Barnard, a study of Rajasthani Folk Musicians commissioned by the Jodhpur RIFF foundation and a ‘road documentary’ of the UK revival tour of the 60’s rock band, the MC5 commissioned by Muscletone Records.
My film ‘God’s Alcatraz’ was selected for commendation by Jean Rouch at the Bilan du Film Ethnographique in Paris and won awards at the London Film Festival, the Margaret Mead Documentary Film Festival in NY and received praise at festivals around the globe. The film is distributed in the US through the Filmmaker’s Library in NY.
In 2004 I was awarded a grant by the Arts Council England for my first stills project – ‘The Estate’ a study of a tower block in the U.K. and since then I have collaborated with other artists for gallery based work. 2014, I am developing a non-linear film installation in partnership with Richard Billingham a renowned artist/documentarian (Turner prize nominee 2001). Whilst working on ‘Life is good’ (project proposed) I have also just completed a short film with NamKuk Kim an avant-garde Korean composer(2014).
